The Green Hunt
Wednesday February 16 was the Green Gates Treasure Hunt that Green Gates had been preparing for a very long time. Participants gathered in teams of 2-5 and each came up with a team name, and then gathered at the HOP at 8pm to receive their clues to the locations of various stations of the treasure hunt where they could earn points. Ultimately teams tried to aim for the highest number of points possible. At the station that I was in charge of, ALANA, teams played taboo, answered trivia questions, and did a funny pose (check out the cool funny poses!) Around 9:30, teams met back at the HOP with their points to take part in a “Trash Fashion Show”, trash provided (newspapers, cardboard, empty bottles, you name it). Participants designed and constructed their own unique “fashion breakthrough,” and points were awarded for creativity, use of materials, whether or not it held in place during the catwalk, and the attractiveness of the dress (check out the amazing outfits that the teams came up with!) Overall the treasure hunt project was a success, congratulations and thank you to all the teams for the amazing fun!

What We Did Last Semester!
Green Gates has been volunteering at the Farmer’s Market for several weeks during fall until the first signs of winter (around the week before Thanksgiving). Farmer’s Market goes on every Saturday, during which farmers and small business companies from around Hamilton gather to sell their fresh produce. Aside from selling fresh vegetables and flowers from these local farms, businesses and even families can reserve a station and sell their own home-made products (like knitted sweaters), jewelry, and some amazing food (fresh bread and pies are a must). There is even a van parked in the corner selling delicious BBQ pork burgers for $5 each, which is always a nice change from Frank food.
Basically what Green Gates does is operate the token station located in the center of the Farmer’s Market to facilitate the monetary exchange of tokens, which can be bought with credit card instead of cash (so it is always a good idea to visit the token station if you arrive at the token stations without cash). More importantly, we operate the EBT machine, which allows lower-income families who have food stamps to exchange them into tokens so they can buy organic, fresh produce from the Market! Allowing lower-income families access to the Farmer’s Market means they are able to consume in a healthier manner and support the local economy.

The Farmer’s Market is always a nice Saturday morning stroll from Colgate. Support Hamilton’s local farms, eat healthy, and sustain a clean environment! Come to the Farmer’s market to buy fresh local produce.

New to the COVE… Green Gates!
We are looking forward to starting a new year at Colgate. We’ve started fresh with a new mission and a new way to get involved on campus and in the community. We are really excited to get started, but before we do, we need two things:
1. Volunteers. We’ll have a sign-up sheet at the Activities Fair on Sept. 15, so please come by and add your name to our list! We accept new members throughout the year, too. Since our format is to gather volunteers for specific events, you can sign up for any of our projects that interest you. Being on our mailing list will keep you informed about which events are coming up and will give you an opportunity to volunteer. Feel free to email us at ColgateGreenGates@gmail.com if you want to be added!
2. Projects. We have some projects in the works, but we need you—the Colgate community and our off-campus friends—to let us know how we can help you complete your work! If you have something going on that could use some volunteers, email us and let us know what we can do. We will be more than happy to arrange a team for your project. We love to work on things that benefit the environment or positively impact sustainability initiatives in the community.
If you have any questions, send it to us here on our blog or shoot us an email!
